Application process

October 2014 - September 2016, the research and planning began;

October 2016 - July 2017, Yancheng Yellow Sea Wetlands were included in the preparatory list;

April 2017 - September 2017, pre-trial text preparation;

October 2017 - January 2018, formal text preparation and reporting;

February 2018 - October 2018, expert field assessment visit;

November 2018 - May 2019, the assessment report was passed;

May 26- July 5, 2019, World Natural Heritage Center deliberation.

In December 2016, the leading group of Yancheng Yellow Sea Wetlands application for World Natural Heritage was established

In February 2017, " the Coast of the Bohai Gulf and the Yellow Sea of China" serial projects were included in the tentative list of World Natural Heritage

 

Since March 2017, more than 300 people were organized to carry out comprehensive scientific research and compile the legacy text

 

  

On September 30, 2017, pre-examination application was submitted and passed


In November 2017, the first Yellow & Bohai Sea Coastal Wetlands Symposium was held

On January 31, 2018, the application for The Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China (Phase I) were submitted to the World Heritage Center, with more than 2 million words and nearly 5,000 pages in both Chinese and English.

 

At the end of February 2018, the proposed document passed the format review of the UNESCO Heritage Centre

From March to August 2018, comprehensive evaluation of heritage nominated sites were carried out and evaluated

January 25, 2019

Led and organized by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, the establishment meeting & the first member assembly of the Yellow Sea (Bohai) Migratory Bird Sanctuaries were held in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, with 9 community organizations and 17 members of nature conservation areas attending the conference. 

The secretariat is set in Yancheng. The meeting discussed and adopted the Charter of the Alliance for the Migratory Habitats of Yellow (Bohai) Sea Regional Protected Area, which marked the initial establishment of a cross-regional and cross-institutional linkage protection mechanism for the migratory habitats of Yellow (Bohai) Sea regional protected area.

 

In February 2019

In accordance with the Operational Guidelines of the World Heritage Convention, the Chinese government declared Tiaozini as part of the first phase of the nomination, saying it was planned to submit the text of the second phase of the nomination by February 2022.

Tiaozini, as a key area for the migration of migratory, has been highly concerned by the international community. The government of Jiangsu Province and Yancheng City solemnly promised to "permanently abandon reclamation and include Tiaozini into the World Natural Heritage site of Yancheng Yellow Sea Wetlands ".

 

Yancheng Municipal People's Government went to IUCN headquarters to communicate with the technical support team.

May 15, 2019

The World Heritage Centre officially gave feedback on the assessment of The Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China (Phase I), recognizing the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the Yellow Sea Wetlands in Yancheng, but hoping the application would include the other 14 sites, so it is recommended to "request a re-submission".

May - June 2019

Yancheng Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government immediately made a decision to strive for the success of the application. The application team reported and negotiated with relevant national ministries and commissions to discuss coping strategies. The executive and the application team went to the World Heritage Center, IUCN and other international organizations to further communicate on the recognition of heritage value and declaration time.

The Chinese Government and the World Heritage Centre have received letters from 62 representatives and experts and scholars of international organizations such as BirdLife International, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and other international organizations. Those letters repeatedly emphasized the value of the heritage site and the urgency of its protection, and supported the project's inclusion

July 5, 2019

The mayor of Yancheng city government led a team to Azerbaijan to participate in the 43rd World Heritage General Assembly. During the period, the Yancheng program was explained with the committee countries, and consensus was reached with Australia and other national committee countries to propose the General Assembly amendment. The fact that Yancheng was listed in the World Heritage shows that the international cohesion and leading role of the idea of ecological civilization has come to the fore. The concept of adhering to the core of green development and building a close "community of life" has gained a high degree of recognition from the international community. China has begun to grasp the power of international ecological discourse, which is a great success of "ecological diplomacy".

 

 

July 2019 - Present

Yancheng’s leading role has been fulfilled in the second phase of the declaration of the World Heritage site.

Following the successful inscription of Yancheng as a World Heritage Site, the second phase of the declaration process has begun. Yancheng, as a leader of the serial property, served as a model for the application for World Heritage status of the Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of the Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China (Phase II), and convened the General Assembly of the Alliance of Protected Areas of the Heritage Region in Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China, which has contributed experience for the declaration of the Yellow Sea ecological region and the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.

 

The declaration of Yancheng Yellow Sea Wetland has fully demonstrated the firm determination of Chinese governments at all levels to implement Xi Jinping's Thought on Ecological Civilization and to promote ecological conservation endeavors. The declaration also reflected the international recognition of China's ecological civilization construction concepts and achievements.
