The Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of the Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China is situated in the Yellow Sea ecological region, recognized as one of WWF's (World Wide Fund for Nature) Global Top 200 ecological regions. The sanctuaries boast the world's most expansive intertidal mudflats. Positioned centrally within the East Asian-Australasian Flyway (EAAF), these sanctuaries are home to a significant number of endangered species facing intense threats. Given that the sanctuaries are 7000km away from both the breeding grounds and wintering grounds of many shorebirds, this site acts as an essential stopover site for various plovers and snipes. These crucial habitats encompass rich mudflats, silty shores, sandy coasts, estuarine mud shores, islands or rocky coasts, and reed swamp wetlands.

The nominated sites of the Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of the Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulfof China consist of 16 distinct bird habitats. The Phase I site is situated in Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, spanning Dongtai City, Dafeng District, Tinghu District, and Sheyang County.This phase includes two national nature  reserves  dedicated to rare birds  and  Milu  deer, the municipal Tiaozini Wetland Park,  and  conservation communities. Covering a total of 186,400 hectares, Phase I accounts for 42% of the combined area of the 16 nominated sites.

The Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China (Phase I) comprises two parts: the Migratory Bird Habitat in the South of Yancheng, Jiangsu (YS- 1) and the Migratory Bird Habitat in the North of Yancheng, Jiangsu (YS-2).

The Southern Migratory Bird Habitat (YS- 1), spanning an area of 144,839 hectares, encompasses the Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve, the Southern and Dongsha experimental zones of Yancheng Wetland Rare Birds National Nature Reserve, Yancheng Tiaozini Wetland Park, and conservation communities in Tiaozini wetlands and  Gaoni muddy tidal wetlands in Dongtai City. The Northern Migratory Bird Habitat (YS-2), covering 43,804 hectares, is situated within the central region of the Yancheng Wetland Rare Birds National Nature Reserve (its core area and a portion of the intertidal zone).
